back-to-school tips for hair

  1. Book back-to-school appointments ASAP

    • This is not a drill! Even if your stylist doesn’t have their books open, see if you can get on a waitlist for whatever day is best before you go back to campus. Don’t think too hard about it; just do it and be aware of the salon’s cancellation policy in the event you might need to change it. In all my years, no one has regretted rehabilitating their summer scalps and strands. If you’re not sure what look to get, have inspiration pics and questions ready for your pre-appointment consult.

  2. Brush your hair

    • With summer behind us, your hair might feel parched and starched. The first thing to do, however, is never a full-blown surgery. Rather, start with what I might call a Princess Brushout Session. I love reading historical fiction (like this one) that tells the tales of princesses with golden locks down their backsides plaited into protective lattices. The number one reason they had hair the length of their legs? Brushing. They didn’t have the technological wonders of serums and sprays like we do today, nay. They had brushes and maidens to do it for them for hours on end. Do the same, and you’ll rehab much of your salted and sunned crown and glory.

  3. When it comes to color go subtle and soft

    • If your semester is starting, now is not the time for a high-maintenance look. Opt for something that will keep you feeling pretty until you can book another refresher during the holidays or even spring. If you went all in for a popping, short-lived summer look, see if there’s a way your stylist can blend in colors that are closer to your natural so that it doesn’t distract you from your school session greatness.

  4. Invest in at-home care

    • My favorites for an at-home or in-dorm refresher include glosses, deep conditioners, oils, and toning shampoos and conditioners. Having ways to stay fresh on your own provides instant mid-semester pick-me-ups and also keeps your expensive color lasting as long as possible before it’s time for another salon visit. 5. Book back-from-school appointments ASAP

    • You’re going to get busy, and then you’ll be on your way home for the holidays, thinking about your hair. You can either be looking forward to an appointment already or scrambling, hoping, and wishing you could have one.

    Happy Styling!
